Turning Big Data into Better Doctors

TrueLearn possessed a wealth of test-taking metrics and performance factors from thousands of medical students. The challenge was to architect a meaningful, multi-platform experience that provided high-value insights to both individual students and large-scale medical institutions.

The cross-functional team comprising a data scientist, systems architect, lead engineer, and product designer took a greenfield approach to reimagining the learning landscape. This focused on two core pillars:

Engineering a resilient backend capable of processing millions of data points, ensuring high-concurrency performance and secure system integration across the entire institutional ecosystem.

Usability & Accessibility: Recognizing the high-stakes nature of medical licensure meant prioritizing an inclusive, accessible interface. Conducting deep user research to simplify complex data visualizations, ensuring the dashboard was intuitive for both students managing stress and deans requiring high-level oversight.

Institutional Oversight: The Performance Analytics Engine provides an at-a-glance view of student performance relative to national averages. This allows academic leaders to identify curriculum gaps and opportunities for targeted intervention in real-time.

Student Metacognition: Students gain invaluable insights into their own study habits through metacognitive tools, receiving data-driven suggestions to improve efficiency and exam performance.

Targeted Intervention: The Student Overview equipped advisors with granular, category-level analytics. Visualizing strengths and weaknesses enabled a shift from reactive advising to proactive, data-driven strategy.

The Student Overview equipped university learning specialists with a comprehensive view of an individual student’s performance, including licensure practice exam results, percentile ranking, category-level strengths and weaknesses, question-level analytics, and completed assessments. Through intuitive performance indicators and targeted improvement suggestions, it enabled advisors to quickly pinpoint areas of struggle and guide students toward focused, data-driven study strategies.

The TrueLearn student performance graph provided learning specialists and deans with an at-a-glance view of how their students were performing relative to the national average, as well as within their own medical institution and specific programs. By visualizing comparative performance data in real time, it enabled academic leaders to quickly identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for targeted intervention.
